AUSTIN &045; There was no second guessing or wondering what went wrong for the Albert Lea High School softball team at Austin Tuesday.
The Tigers just couldn’t hit the ball &045; literally.
Angie Rohne and Amy Kelly threw back-to-back no-hitters at the Tigers as the Packers swept a Big Nine doubleheader 11-1 and 6-0 at Austin’s Todd Park.
&uot;The girls were flat,&uot; said coach Rick Harves. &uot;Not the whole team, but a significant portion of the team. It was a long day for us in the field.&uot;
That’s because the Tigers had 12 errors &045; six in each game &045; to go along with 20 Austin hits.
In the opener, Rohne, the Packers’ No. 2 pitcher, had two strikeouts and one walk in a game shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule. Albert Lea scored an unearned run in the third inning. Amy Kelly struck out seven Tigers and walked one while going the distance in game two.
Nicole Rafdal pitched both games for the Tigers and, according to Harves, did well.
&uot;We just had too many errors,&uot; said the coach.
The losses dropped the Tigers’ record to 1-7 while Austin improved to 7-0.
&uot;What I told the team is we have to forget it and put it behind us,&uot; said Harves. &uot;We’re capable of playing much better, the girls know it. We just struggled today.&uot;
The Tigers play in the NRHEG Panther Invitational Saturday.
