50 years ago – 1953

– Gordy West, longtime outfielder for the Albert Lea Packers baseball team, named as manager for the Emmons town baseball team.

– Bob Emerson pitched a one-hitter in Alden High School’s 3-0 victory over Kiester. Emerson and Ross Peterson each hit two doubles for Alden.

– Austin High School senior Robert A. Hastings was named winner of the All Sportsman Clubs’ annual “Minnesota High School Athlete of the Year” award and a $250 college scholarship. Hastings was a straight A

student and lettered four years in baseball, three years in football and two years in basketball.

25 years ago – 1978

– School records set in a triangular track meet for Albert Lea High School included Steve Farnes in the intermediate hurdles with a time of 40.6 seconds and Scott Doyle in the 880-yard run in a time of 1:56.4.

– The Albert Lea High School boys’ tennis team defeated Winona 3-2. Winners for the Tigers included Dennis Bergstrom 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, Dan Mott and Jay Brattebo 6-2, 4-6 and 6-2 at No. 1 doubles and Bob Shephard and Bob Nothwehr 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles

– The Albert Lea Tigers baseball team improved to 2-0 in the Big Nine Conference with a 5-1 win over Mankato East. Steve Curry threw a three-hitter, Ellard Haugen had two hits and Dave Long had two RBIs for the Tigers.

10 years ago – 1993

– In high school softball Glenville-Emmons defeated Bethlehem Academy 18-5. Michelle Hillman pitched a seven-hitter for G-E, Jennifer Avery hit a base-loaded double and Jamie Kleven had three RBIs and scored three runs. In their second game of the week the Wolverines lost to New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva 6-1. Jill Anderson pitched a no-hitter for NRHEG, striking out 19 and facing only 25 batters.

– The Glenville-Emmons baseball team defeated Alden-Conger 12-6. Winning pitcher Tom Fredrickson threw a four-hitter and had four hits in five at bats, including a double, and had three RBIs.

– Dean Hanson improved to 4-0 for the season with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles in the ALHS’s 6-1 win over Waseca.
