About all Albert Lea High School girls’ golf coach Shawn Riebe could do was tip his cap and shake his head.
Fairmont was that good.
The visiting Cardinals came to town and made themselves right at home at Albert Lea Country Club, firing a 152 for nine holes while the Tigers had 218 in a nonconference dual meet Thursday.
&uot;That’s unreal,&uot; said Riebe of the Cardinals’ score, which came not only on one of the area’s toughest courses but in cold, windy conditions.
&uot;Their coach said they’ve won their section the last two or three years, and they’re thinking they’re going to compete real well again,&uot; said Riebe. &uot;It sure looks like it.&uot;
Meghan Bishop took medalist honors and led the Cardinals with a 35. Fairmont’s other scores that counted were 37, 38 and 42.
Brie Woitas shot 48 to lead Albert Lea. The Tigers’ other scores: Laura Ellingson 51, Catie Rebelein 59, Betsy Paulson 60, Kelsie Walton 60, Katie Dooley 73.
The Albert Lea junior varsity lost 230-244 Scoring for the Tigers: Kaeli Wayne 57, April Heilmann 59, Alli Arnold 63, Brooke Woitas 65.
The loss dropped the varsity Tigers to 0-3. They’re 0-1 in the Big Nine.
&uot;We only lost to Waseca by 11, so that wasn’t so bad,&uot; said Riebe, who added that the Mayo meet was one-sided.
&uot;I think the girls are frustrated by not being able to get outside and fix things,&uot; said Riebe. &uot;But they’re keeping a good attitude about it. We have a good ninth-grade squad that’s getting experience right now, which is what we’re working for. So hopefully we can get something moving.&uot;
The Tigers play Monday at Austin.
