Albert Lea’s Rainbow Foods store will be closing next month.
The West Main Street store is among the12 Rainbow Foods stores in Minnesota and Wisconsin that Fleming Cos. plans to close by June 10.
The 12 stores, and one that has already closed, were not among the 31 Rainbow supermarkets that Pewaukee, Wis.-based Roundy’s Inc. has offered to buy from financially troubled Fleming.
Pat Liska, president of Hopkins-based Rainbow Foods, said stores were informed of the pending closings Wednesday night and Thursday.
The four stores scheduled for closing on May 31 include the two Rainbows in Rochester; one of the two stores in Blaine, and one in Wausau, Wis. Another store, in St. Louis Park, closed two weeks ago.
The eight stores scheduled for closing on June 10 include stores in Albert Lea, Faribault, Mankato and St. Cloud in greater Minnesota, plus Oak Park Heights, Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center and one of the three stores in Plymouth in the metro area.
Fleming spokesman Shane Boyd didn’t have an exact count of employees at the 12 stores, but said Rainbow stores average around 40 to 50 employees each &045; two-thirds of them part-time &045; which would work out to roughly 480 to 600.
Employees at Albert Lea’s store refused to comment for the story.
Albert Lea currently has a Hy-Vee grocery store, a Buy and Save discount grocery store, and a Super Wal-Mart is to be finished by the end of the summer, which will have a grocery unit inside.
It is still unclear whether another chain will buy Albert Lea’s or the other 11 Rainbow stores around the state.
Though it has been rumored that Hy-Vee is thinking about purchasing the store, Al Weisert, manager of Albert Lea’s Hy-Vee, said that was untrue.
