Another one gets away from G-E

AUSTIN &045; Building a lead on opponents has been no problem for the Glenville-Emmons baseball team.

Finishing them off has been another issue.

The Wolverines, who squandered a 9-2 lead and lost a share of the Southeast Conference title last Friday, saw a 7-2 lead slip away in an 8-7 loss to Goodhue in sub-section tournament play at Austin Tuesday.

Again, errors were critical for the Wolverines as all five of Goodhue’s final six runs were unearned.

&uot;There were plays in the field we had to make that we couldn’t make, it’s as simple as that,&uot; said coach Louie Toulouse. &uot;We just aren’t making the plays in the field. And our bats went silent again.&uot;

After Goodhue took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Wolverines tied it in the third and plated five runs in the fourth.

It remained 7-2 until the top of the sixth, when Goodhue scored on a two-out base hit. Two more scored after the Wolverines dropped a fly ball.

In the seventh, after a leadoff single, the Wolverines went for a double play on a comebacker to the mound but the throw was off the mark at second. A walk loaded the bases. One run scored on a wild pitch, and two more came in on ground outs.

A couple other plays earlier in the game could also have made the difference, according to Toulouse.

&uot;I counted four plays tonight,&uot; said the coach. &uot;If we could have made any one of the four, we would have won the game.&uot;

And, as they did last Friday, the Wolverines struggled offensively in the second half of the game, not getting a hit after the fourth inning.

Isaiah Parry was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs, Alex Hansen 2-for-4 with one RBI and Jake Hansen 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Wade Flattum, Kris Knutson, Michael Greibrok and Devan Kaasa each had one hit.

Mitch Meier pitched a complete game, giving up two earned runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out three.

The Wolverines, 7-8, remain alive in the double-elimination tournament that continues Thursday.
