Albert Lea High School baseball coach Joe Sczublewski pinpointed the key statistic right away.

It was walks.

&uot;We’re giving up too many opportunities for the other team,&uot; said Sczublewski. &uot;And these other teams are taking advantage of them.&uot;

That’s what happened Tuesday as visiting Fairmont capitalized on nine walks to defeat the Tigers 6-3 in a nonconference game at Hayek Field.

&uot;It’s another one of those that we let slip away,&uot; said Sczublewski, whose squad remained winless with two regular-season games remaining. &uot;Somehow, we’ve got to be more consistent in the last part of the season. We need to be mentally tough. We need to compete with the game is on the line, and that’s an area where we’ve been lacking.&uot;

Ryan Truesdell was a positive Tuesday, hitting a two-run home run in the fifth inning. It was the second homer in two games for the sophomore, who played shortstop.

The Tigers’ other run came in the third, when Nate Loberg doubled and scored on a single by Derek Goodnature.

Brandon Klukow and Nick Veldman had Albert Lea’s other hits.

Goodnature took the loss, starting and pitching six innings while allowing four earned runs on six hits. He walked nine and struck out eight. Klukow pitched the seventh.

The Tigers are at Mankato East for a nonconference game today. They host Rochester John Marshall Friday.
