Editorial: Blazing Star Trail reaches new milestone

The hard work of a dedicated group will bear fruit this summer when the Blazing Star Trail is extended 4.5 miles to the east, more than tripling the length of the recreational trail. After almost a decade, the trail will get closer to its goal of reaching Hayward and, eventually, Austin.
The trail is already well used, and with the extension, its reputation will grow along with its value as a community resource and tourism draw. This summer’s extension will also help put the unspoiled natural beauty of Myre-Big Island State Park on display as the trail winds through.
From Mayor Jean Eaton, to the members and leaders of the Freeborn County Trail Association, to enthusiastic supporters in Hayward, to others who have been involved in getting the Blazing Star Trail to this point, a round of congratulations is in order.
But these people know as well as anyone that there’s much more to be done. Backers are not going to stop until the trail reaches its goal, which will take more time, more money and more effort. Others in Freeborn County who have enjoyed the trail or can envision the great possibilities it presents for recreation in this area should consider getting involved in some way and helping out toward this goal.
