Henry Kalis will not seek appointment for the open space on the United South Central school board, according to a press release Kalis sent out Monday.
Kalis, a long time state representative, was courted by a group of residents in the district to fill the position left open when former board member Mary Thrond resigned.
“I have been very humbled by the broad base of support I have received from around the district, and know I would have enjoyed the challenge,” he wrote in the release.
Kalis had been considering the position for the past month. He said he made the decision not to go after the position after speaking with board members.
&uot;There were a number of reasons,&uot; he said. &uot;It just didn’t seem like all of the board were going to be happy about having me there. I didn’t want to step into something where maybe they had someone else in mind. It would be better if they had a unified board.&uot;
Kalis said he wishes the district well and offered any assistance he could give to them.
“I am hopeful we as the USC district can work with our board and new superintendent and continue the good quality education we have provided in the past and which our students deserve today and in the future,” Kalis wrote. “I would offer my assistance to the USC board and administration and with them the very best in the future.”
