Today is a day dedicated to remembering those who sacrificed their lives for our county. In every town and city across the country, people are gathering to remember their fellow soldiers, others take time to
reflect on missed loved ones. For all, it is a bittersweet day.
“I think all the guys think a lot about the people they’ve been in the service with,” H.O. Thompson, a Korean War veteran, said. “The
ones who made it and the ones who didn’t.”
The annual day of reflection honors those who died in the conflicts and wars that the United States has taken part in.
Throughout the day today, members of local veteran’s groups will have taken part in parades, ceremonies and services.
Thompson said he will take time to think of members of his family who served in the armed forces; his father who served in World War I and his cousin who died while finishing his duties overseas after World War II.
For some, it is a time to reflect on those who might have passed on after war time.
&uot;I had a lot of friends that I don’t get to see any more,&uot; Dale Newgard, a Navy Veteran who served during the Korean War , said. &uot;There are some guys who come here who had friends killed in battle. For them I’m sure it’s not an easy day.&uot;
For Ida Mildenstein, and her husband Jim, it’s just that.
&uot;My husband was
a service man,&uot; she said. &uot;We still go to the cemeteries for services. It brings back a lot of terrible memories. It makes you thankful for what you still have.&uot;
