50 years ago – 1953

– Bricelyn, behind the three hit-pitching and 13 strikeouts by Rollo Klihn, defeated Alden 9-2 in high school baseball. Severt Legred and Kay Anderson led Bricelyn with two hits each.

– Sophomore Roger Nelson placed first in the 100-yard dash, 220, high jump and ran anchor on a winning relay team to lead Albert Lea High School to an 82-31 victory over Austin in track and field.

– Freeborn defeated Emmons 7-6 in high school baseball. Harold Getskow was the winning pitcher and also hit a three-run homer.

25 years ago – 1978

– The Albert Lea High School softball team defeated Rochester John Marshall 19-2. Albert Lea sent 14 batters to the plate in the first inning. Connie Nelson, Julie Schrieber and Mary Brackey each doubled in the first inning. Brackey was 4-for-4 at the plate.

– Albert Lea senior running back Jeff White was named to the South team for the 5th Annual High School Shrine All-Star Football Game.

– Alden-Conger defeated Emmons 27-14 in high school softball. A-C’s winning pitcher, Sharon Jensen, had four hits in five at bats as did Lori Knutson. Knutson hit two grand slam home runs for A-C.

– Pete Rose, 37-year-old Cincinnati Red, reached the 3,000-hit mark.

10 years ago – 1993

– Five new members were added to the Freeborn County Fast-Pitch Softball Hall of Fame. They included Bill Chicos, Bud Varner, Merle Bartness, Ken Jordahl and Elmer Hefta.

– In a triangular boys’ high school golf match, Albert Lea shot a 308 to Rochester John Marshall’s 332 and Faribault’s 352. Scores for the Tigers were Phil Schmidt 71, Chris Baas 76, Matt Stay 80 and Brendan Danielson 91.

– The ALHS girls’ golf team improved to 4-2 for the season with a 398-408 win over Austin. Donna Boom shot a 92, Jody Mack 96, Christie Strecker 101 and Lisa Dombroske 107 for the Tigers.

– Kristin Maslakow pitched a seven-hitter for United South Central in a 4-3 win over Blue Earth Area in high school softball. Trina Halvorson had two RBIs and Julie Zebro hit a home run for the Rebels.
