USC golf boys defend sub-section title

MONTGOMERY &045; The United South Central boys’ golf team may have had its ups and downs during the regular season, but, so far, the Rebels are undefeated when it counts the most.

After winning the Gopher Conference tournament last week, the Rebels defended their Sub-Section 2A East title at Montgomery Golf Club Monday.

The Rebels won with 326 strokes for 18 holes. Blue Earth Area was second with 330, earning the right to join the Rebels in the Section 2A tournament, and JWP was third with 331. Thirteen teams competed.

Ryan Treptow led the Rebels with a 77. Chris Adams shot 82, Justin Knutson 83, Tyler Pederson 84, Ben Wetzell 86 and Scott Halvorson 89.

NRHEG finished sixth with 350. Scoring for the Panthers were Jess Recknor, 82; Art Mills, 87; Bryan Kormann, 87; Derek Chicos, 94; Matt Harrington, 96; and Andy Braaten, 98. Recknor and Mills advanced to section as individuals, with Mills surviving a five-way playoff for the final spot.

Glenville-Emmons was seventh with 355. Kelsey Martinson shot 86, qualifying for section. Also scoring for G-E: Seth Holstad, 88; Jarrad Knutson, 89; and Matt Webb, 92.

Alden-Conger finished ninth, totaling 392. Scoring for the Knights: Jason Hemmingsen, 96; Lee Haines, 97; Nick Reindal, 98; and Derek Peterson, 101.

The USC boys, along with NRHEG’s Recknor and Mills and Glenville-Emmons’ Martinson, will compete in the Section 2A tournament Tuesday at Interlachen in Fairmont. The Rebels are the defending section champions.
