Walter D. “Scotty” Scott, 86, Albert Lea

Memorial services for Walter D. “Scotty” Scott of Albert Lea will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 29, at the Bonnerup Funeral Service Chapel in Albert Lea. The Rev. Don Rose will officiate. There will be no visitation. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded.

Mr. Scott died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the Thorne Crest North Retirement Center in Albert Lea. He was 86 years of age.

Walter was born May 1, 1917, in Minneapolis, the son of William and Maime Scott. As a young child he was introduced to the Clarks Grove area and later moved back to Minneapolis.

Walter enlisted in the U.S. Marines and during this time he earned his high school diploma. He served during World War II and received a Appreciation Of Service award while in battle and also received the Purple Heart. Upon returning to Minnesota, he founded Scott Building and Construction, later to be called Scott-Kelly Inc. While working he attend the University of Minnesota and received his bachelor’s degree. Walter was responsible for many of the businesses and homes built in Clarks Grove and Albert Lea area for over 25 years. In the spring of 1955-1956, Walter built a number of homes in the northeast section of Albert Lea that were considered reasonable housing. In 1957, Walter and his partner built homes for the next 10 years in the Ridgewood Park Development area. In the early 1960s, Scott-Kelly Construction again built several homes in the Albert Lea Southview Addition. Walter was considered to be a craftsman at his work. He retired in 1981. In addition to his construction, Walter was a very active photo journalist and was published in area newspapers and had several photos go out on the Associated Press. Walter enjoyed fishing, hunting, and the arts, including his favorite pastime creating wood inlay pictures, gardening, scrapbooking, reading and collecting coins and plates.

Walter was an active member of the American Legion Post 56 and the VFW Post 447 in Albert Lea. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, National Cartridge Association and had been a private airplane pilot. He was also an active member of the Clarks Grove Area Heritage Society and published many of the photos included in their brochure.

Walter is survived by his first wife, Vernetta Scott of Geneva, and their children: DuLane Scott of Illinois, Leah Wayne of Geneva, Sharon Scott of Dayton, Iowa, Melissa Anderson of Owatonna, Carol Lynn Scott of Geneva and Mark Scott of Michigan; Walter’s second wife, Irene Scott of Albert Lea, and their children: Donald Scott of Mora, Minn., Candy Phillips of Clarks Grove, Melody Webber of Albert Lea, Kathleen Dale of Lakeville, Minn., and Patrick Scott of Albert Lea. There are numerous grand, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Irene F. Scott of Richfield, Minn.; one brother, William Scott of Minneapolis; and several nieces and nephews.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Minnie Scott; wife, Betty; sons: William G. Scott and Michael L. Scott; one brother, Robert Scott; and sister, Margaret Scott.

I am home in heaven, dear ones; Oh! So happy and so bright!; There is perfect joy and beauty, in this everlasting light; All the pain and grief are over, every restless yearning past; I am now at peace forever, safely home in heaven at last.

Walter D. Scott will be sadly and dearly missed by his family and friends.
