SPRING GROVE &045; There were dozens of plays in the game, but the one that stood out in the mind of Glenville-Emmons softball coach Lisa Ziebell was a routine grounder up the middle.
The Wolverines failed to handle it cleanly, and it led to four unearned runs in a 7-6 loss at Southeast Conference-leading Spring Grove/Caledonia Thursday.
&uot;It’s a game we should have won,&uot; said Ziebell. &uot;We had a chance to knock off the top team in the conference. We handled six of the seven innings just fine.&uot;
Despite allowing the unearned runs, the Wolverines rallied to tie it 6-6 in the top of the sixth inning and had a chance to at least tie it in the top of the seventh, when they had two runners on with one out &045; but a baserunning miscue resulted in a game-ending double play.
The Wolverines stranded seven baserunners for the game.
&uot;Hopefully, by tournament time we won’t make those crucial mistakes,&uot; said Ziebell.
Five Glenville-Emmons players had one hit apiece: Jenna Brackey, Katie Brackey, Alisa Rayman, Becky Anderson and Becky Ericksen.
Jenna Brackey pitched another complete game, giving up eight hits and one walk. She struck out seven.
