Bunkers hinder Breuer at state

COON RAPIDS &045; Dan Breuer had a disappointing first day in the Class AA state boys’ golf tournament.

The Albert Lea High School senior shot an 8-over-par 80 on Tuesday, tying him for 38th place &045; 10 strokes away from first place &045; at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids.

&uot;Obviously, Dan had much higher aspirations than that coming into today,&uot; said ALHS coach Matt Addington. &uot;He had been playing pretty well, and was hoping to be right in the thick of the hunt for the championship. Obviously, this played him out of that race, but if he plays the way he’s capable, he can still bring home a medal and have a respectable finish.&uot;

Breuer, who set a Section 1AA record with a 5-under-par 138 for 36 holes, shot 38 and 42 on Tuesday while hitting only five of 18 greens in regulation. That was his strength in the section tournament, when he hit 33 of 36 greens.

&uot;A lot of Dan’s shots went astray, and he was in the sand a lot,&uot; said Addington. &uot;Bunker Hills is called that for a reason. Dan played extremely well out of the sand, but it’s tough to make birdies out of there.&uot;

Clayton Rask, a senior from Elk River, was the first-round leader with a 70.

Section 1AA team champion Owatonna had a 307, good for second place behind the leader Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Hastings was third with 312, with Elk River, Grand Rapids and Willmar all shooting 313.

The tournament concludes today at Bunker Hills, and Addington is hopeful Breuer will finish strong.

&uot;He has a strong enough game,&uot; said the coach. &uot;He can come back out and have a good round.&uot;
