Corrine Tims, principal of Hawthorne Elementary school, presented awards to the volunteers who put on the Norman show, a show about character education.

The show, which has been going on for years, is a monthly skit designed to show students how to become better people. Focusing on traits such as courage, friendship, loyalty and many more, their goal is to make students think of the positive effects their actions and words can have on others.

The schools work on the monthly themes, and each student and teacher has to keep track of situations in which they try to use those learned traits.

&uot;It is a great program,&uot; Tims said. &uot;We have teachers who have moved to this school from others in the district who say Hawthorne has a different feel to it. I think it’s wonderful.&uot;

The skits are put on by four volunteers who use puppets to get the message across.

School board chair Ken Petersen said that volunteers keep the school district going.

&uot;Our school system wouldn’t be what it is without the efforts of volunteers such as you,&uot; he said, gesturing to the Hawthorne actors. &uot;We have nearly 500 volunteers and this district wouldn’t work without them.&uot;
