Eugene M. Tukua, 83, Hartland

Funeral services for Eugene M. Tukua, age 83, of Hartland, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, at the Cross of Glory Lutheran Church, Hartland. The Rev. Dennis Frank will officiate. Interment will be in the Hartland Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by area servicemen’s organizations. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday, June 23, at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Eugene died Saturday, June 21, 2003, at his home.

Eugene Manville Tukua was born on June 28, 1919, in Hartland Township, the son of Erick and Emma (Madson) Tukua. He lived all of his life in the Hartland area. Duke attended school at District 10, completing eight years. He was baptized and confirmed at the West Freeborn Lutheran Church, later joining the Cross of Glory Lutheran Church. During World War II, from May of 1941 to October of 1945, Duke served in the U. S. Army. He was stationed in North Africa, Sicily and landed at Anzio Beach in Italy.

On June 30,1947, he was united in marriage to H. Myrtle Hatle in the Hartland Parsonage.

Duke worked various construction jobs including 14 years spent with his brothers at Tukua Drainage, and then went to work for Wilson’s for 22 years. He retired from Wilson’s in 1979. Duke was a member of the American Legion in Hartland. He enjoyed bingo and baseball.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle of Hartland; children: Ellen and her husband Richard Chicos of New Richland, Karen Bergner of Mankato, and Gene and his wife Karla Tukua of Hartland; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a brother, Ellsworth and his wife Janet Tukua of Hartland; sister-in-law, Oriole Tukua of Hartland; and many nieces and nephews.

Duke was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and three brothers.
