Four area girls advance to state

MANKATO &045; Four area girls qualified for the Class A state track and field meet, NRHEG’s Nicole Lonning and Kalisha Anthony and United South Central’s Amy Christenson and Jamie Klein.
Lonning, a senior, won the shot put and took second in the discus in the Section 2A meet at Mankato West High School Saturday, advancing in both events. Anthony won the pole vault, earning her third trip to state.
The NRHEG girls were second in the meet with 50 points, behind Cedar Mountain’s 62. USC was sixth with 45. Twenty-two teams scored points.
&uot;We were excited to get three events on to the state meet,&uot; said Panthers co-coach Duey Ferber. &uot;Lonning had a great meet.&uot;
Christenson was a double winner for the Rebels, taking the 100 and 300 hurdles. Klein was second in the 3200.
Missing state by one place was NRHEG’s Kelsie Hansen, who took third in the high jump. The Panthers’ 4×100-meter relay team of Anthony, Camille Kyte, Brandis Hagen and Alison Anderson set a new school record of 51.59 while placing third.
Also placing but not advancing for NRHEG: Megan Groskreutz, fourth, pole vault; Anderson, fifth, 100; Hansen, fifth, 100 hurdles; Kyte, fifth, 200 and sixth, 100.
&uot;Hansen had a good meet to finish up her career,&uot; said Ferber.
USC had two near-misses for state in Rebecca Leland, who was third in the 800 and Sara Bias, who took third in the 3200.
Alden-Conger’s Megan Jensen finished third in the 1600. LeAnn Chessmore of Glenville-Emmons was fourth in the discus.
The state meet is Friday and Saturday at the National Sports Center in Blaine. Lonning will compete in the discus at 2:30 Friday, the shot put at 9 a.m. Saturday. Anthony will pole vault at noon Saturday. Christenson will run in the preliminaries that start at 3 p.m. Friday. Saturday’s running finals begin at 10 a.m.
