Gerhard S. Haugerud, 76, Albert Lea

Funeral services for Gerhard S. Haugerud, age 76, of Albert Lea, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church. The Rev. Thomas Hagen will officiate. Interment will be in the Silver Lake Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by area servicemen’s organizations. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today, June 9, at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Gay died on Saturday, June 7, 2003, at the Albert Lea Medical Center.

Gerhard Seymour Haugerud was born on Oct. 1, 1926, in Worth County Iowa, the son of Sever and Gena (Nelson) Haugerud. He grew up on the family farm in Worth County. As a young man, Gay served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War. Following his discharge from the service, Gay went to work for the American Gas Company, later Queen Products/King Seeley. He retired in 1988.

On Feb. 26, 1984, Gay was united in marriage to Ruth Christopherson at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church. Gay was a 28 year member of AA, a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was a lifelong member of Silver Lake Lutheran Church. Gay enjoyed woodworking, feeding squirrels and visiting with his many friends at HyVee.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Albert Lea; nephew, John and his wife Cathy Haugerud of Northwood, Iowa; niece, Karen and her husband Jim Coomes of Lake Mills, Iowa; eight grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and many great-grand-nieces and great-grand-nephews.

Gay was preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law: Orian and June Haugerud; and his nephew, Ordean Haugerud.
