OWATONNA &045; A Hollandale man has been charged with attempted murder and assault after wounding a police officer during a shooting Saturday morning at a drug store here.
David F. Coughlin, 38, was charged in Steele County District Court Tuesday with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of first-degree assault and one count of second-degree assault in the shooting, which took place shortly after 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Carol Weissenborn, Caughlin’s public defender, said her client claimed he was wounded in the arm and leg during the shootout. He was treated and released from St. Marys Hospital in Rochester the next day.
She said she had not yet read any police reports in the case. &uot;I think what I learned so far, on the face of it, it sounds quite peculiar,&uot; she said. &uot;There are obvious oddities in the account we received. We’ve got to work hard and make sure we understand those peculiarities.&uot;
The criminal complaint said Coughlin entered the store carrying a black bag, two handguns and a rifle. He demanded antibiotics, but had no prescription.
The pharmacist refused his request and an employee asked Coughlin to leave. Coughlin became agitated and climbed over the counter, prompting a store manager to call 9-1-1, the complaint said.
A short time later, Owatonna police officer Joel Welinski entered the store and spotted Coughlin carrying a semiautomatic handgun. Welinski demanded that Coughlin drop the gun. Seconds later, Welinski heard gunshots and the sound of the glass doors shattering behind him.
The complaint said Welinski and Coughlin exchanged gunfire. Welinski was hit in the left knee and in the left elbow.
A short time later, Owatonna police Sgt. Tim Hassing entered the store. Coughlin fired at Hassing, who shot back &045; hitting Coughlin. Hassing was able to then subdue Coughlin until other officers arrived, the complaint said.
