The Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Jam may be the premier sporting attraction in town this weekend, but it’s not the only one.
The 3rd Annual Make-A-Wish Golf Tournament is Sunday at Green Lea Golf Course.
Mike Bennett, a co-chairman of the tournament, is encouraging both golfers and non-golfers to get involved with the fund-raising events, the proceeds of which benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
&uot;For everyone who wants to make a difference in somebody else’s life, this is a good way to do it &045; donate to the foundation,&uot; said Bennett.
The event, which Bennett was started on the spur of the moment three years ago by Becky and Willy Williams of Albert Lea, raised $350 the first year. Last year, it grew to around $1,750.
&uot;The goal this year is definitely to surpass that,&uot; said Williams.
The tournament is a two-person, best-shot format, and the entry fee is $40 for non-Green Lea members and $35 for members. It includes nine holes of golf and a pork chop dinner. Check-in starts at 1 p.m., with a 2 p.m. shot gun start. Participants can sign up until the starting time or in advance at Green Lea.
Bennett said anyone who would like to donate money or an auction item should drop it off at Green Lea in care of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The foundation grants a &uot;wish&uot; to children with life-threatening illnesses, not material objects but something like meeting someone famous or going to Disney World.
&uot;It started in California,&uot; said Bennett. &uot;It was one kid’s wish to be a fire chief. The firemen got to know him and, before he passed away, they got a uniform for him and he was officially sworn in as fire chief. That’s the kind of wishes we grant.&uot;
