Coach Matt Trygstad did his best to schedule the VFW baseball team’s games around the Gus Macker basketball tournament, but they were still short of some regular starters on Sunday.
Those who filled in made sure they didn’t fall short on the scoreboard.
Post 447 took both ends of a doubleheader with the Rochester Knights, winning 8-7 and 6-2 at Hayek Field.
&uot;The guys who played did real well,&uot; said Trygstad. &uot;It shows the depth this team has.&uot;
Six players had hits in the first game, led by Donald Graves at 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Jerrod Stadheim 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Casey Ciffra was 2-for-3. Pete Bracker, Nate Goodnature and Brandon Klukow contributed one hit apiece.
Post 447 rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Klukow singled and Jared Butler walked. Graves reached on an error, scoring Klukow with the tying run. The winning run scored when Stadheim beat out a fielder’s choice.
Dahl was the winning pitcher, not allowing a hit over the final two innings. Klukow started and went the first five.
Travis Klatt was 2-for-3 and Goodnature and Eric Elleby doubled as Post 447 won 6-2 in game two. Brock Sorenson and Bracker had Albert Lea’s other hits.
Dahl started and pitched two innings of scoreless ball. Goodnature finished on the mound, picking up the win.
&uot;It was another good game,&uot; said Trygstad. &uot;Goodnature did a great job pitching.&uot;
Post 447, 3-2 in the Western Division and 6-7 overall, hosts Owatonna today at 5 p.m. On Saturday, the locals entertain the Rochester Rockets in an 11 a.m. doubleheader, and on Sunday they go to Faribault for a doubleheader, also at 11.
