So far, so good for Lake Mills softball squad

The Lake Mills High School softball team is off to a strong start, improving to 6-0 after winning the championship in the Lake Mills Classic last weekend.

&uot;It was a good day,&uot; said coach Jim Boehmer, whose Bulldogs handed Nora Springs-Rock Falls its first loss of the season in the title game. &uot;Any time you can get by NSRF, that is a quality win.&uot;

The Bulldogs opened with a 7-2 victory over Rockwell-Swaledale.

Mindy Bjelland was the leader, pitching a complete game while collecting three of the Bulldogs’ five hits. Melissa Brackey had a home run and two RBIs. Molly Nelson also drove in two runs. Stacie Gaskill doubled.

Brackey’s second home run of the day &045; this one a two-run shot in the first inning, sparked a 4-2 semifinal victory over North Iowa.

Megan Pederson, an eighth-grader, struck out six and walked four for a complete-game pitching victory. The Bulldogs backed her with errorless defense.

&uot;It was a well played game for both teams,&uot; said Boehmer.

The Bulldogs held off a late NSRF rally while winning the championship game 5-1.

Bjelland was back on the mound, allowing only two hits while walking four and fanning five, improving her record to 4-0.

Brackey had two doubles. One of Kasey Nelson’s two hits was a double.

Earlier in the week, the Bulldogs nipped North Kossuth 4-3 in a nonconference game at Lake Mills.

Brackey had another home run, totaling two hits and two RBIs. Krishna Johnson and Stacie Gaskill also doubled. Cristy Nelson’s single drove in Gaskill with the winning run. Kasey Nelson also singled.

Bjelland scattered seven hits, with three walks and two strikeouts. The Bulldogs overcame four errors.

The Bulldogs travel to Fenton tonight to face Sentral and Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka.
