Weekend packed with big events

Father’s Day weekend is a busy one in the area, with major events planned to help kick off the summer.

It all begins with Borderfest in Emmons, which officially starts tonight. The Johnny Holm Band will play for a street dance, which begins at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 per person.

Friday Borderfest events include the marching band parade at 6:30 p.m. Vic Ferrari will perform for an 8 p.m. street dance; admission is $5.

Saturday’s events begin with citywide garage sales at 8 a.m.; a 5K race and fun walk at 10:30 a.m.; an ATV mud run at noon; kids’ games at 1 p.m.; sand volleyball at 1 p.m.; a pedal pull at 5:30 p.m.; the Bergdale motorcycle run at 7:30 p.m.; and a street dance, with Lucky Town playing, beginning at 8 p.m., with an admission charge of $5.

Borderfest activities wind down Sunday with a community church service at 9 a.m.; a community potluck picnic; and an antique tractor pull at noon.

Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.

Friday, June 13

-The Eddie Cochran and Marion Ross exhibit near Heritage Hall in the Freeborn County Historical Museum is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is $2.

-First Lutheran Church Women will host their &uot;Bridal Gown Parade&uot; salad luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Bethany Hall of First Lutheran Church. Cost is $4 per person. Tickets are on sale at all Hallmark stores and at First Lutheran.

-The works of Jaclyn Garlock of Clear Lake, Iowa, are being exhibited at the Albert Lea Art Center, 224 S. Broadway Ave. Gallery hours are from noon-4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are accepted to help defray art center expenses.

-The Eddie Cochran Weekend will kick off with a cruise-in social from 6-10 p.m. at the Country Inn and Suites. Cruise in trophies will be awarded for &uot;Oldies but Goodies,&uot; &uot;People’s Choice&uot; and &uot;Long Distance.&uot;

-The children who have attended vacation Bible school at Zion Lutheran Church, 924 Bridge Ave., will present the live filming of the story of Noah’s ark at 6:45 p.m. at the church. The theme for the week at “Holyword Studios” is “Survivors Under God’s Rainbow.” The public is welcome. Refreshments will follow the presentation.

-The community of Walters is kicking off its centennial celebration with a free outdoor movie in the city park when it gets dark. Root beer floats and popcorn will be available as refreshments.

Saturday, June 14

-Crossroads Community Hospice, a program of Albert Lea Medical Center &045; Mayo Health System, will hold its third annual Friends of Hospice Walk/Run around Fountain Lake.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds, with the Walk/Run from 7:30 – 9:30 a.m.

Registration forms are available by calling Crossroads Community Hospice at 377-6393.

A minimum donation of $5 is asked for participants over the age of 5; $20 maximum per family.

Sideline supporters are also welcome.

-A citywide garage sale, in conjunction with the Eddie Cochran Weekend, will be held from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Maps are available at the Freeborn County Historical Museum and the Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce.

Other Eddie Cochran events happening include a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m.-noon at the fairgrounds; games from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; a craft show from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.; a reunion of former car clubs of Albert Lea and old car buffs from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m.; the cruise line-up and social from 4-6 p.m.; the car cruise beginning and ending at the fairgrounds starting at 6:30 p.m.; and a free sock hop at the fairgrounds from 8 p.m.-midnight.

-The Albert Lea Farmers’ Market is open in the parking lot at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Water Street from 9 a.m.-noon.

-The works of Jaclyn Garlock are being exhibited at the Albert Lea Art Center, 224 S. Broadway Ave. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission is free.

-The Humane Society of Freeborn County is holding a pet adoption event and bake sale fund-raiser from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the center court of Northbridge Mall.

-The Walters centennial celebration continues. A volleyball tournament will be held all day. An antique tractor pull will be held starting at 11 a.m. A pork producers feed will be held from 5-8 p.m. at the Walters Fire Hall. The evening festivities will conclude with a street dance from 8:30 p.m. to midnight, with music by the Dave Lambert Band, and sponsored by the Walters Liquor Store.

-Bancroft Creek Estates will hold an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. The event will include a tour of new apartments. Refreshments will be served. Bancroft Creek Estates is west of Albert Lea Good Samaritan Center.

-The Walters centennial celebration continues with church in the park starting at 9:30 a.m. The parade will be begin at noon. A demolition derby will start at 2 p.m. The volleyball tournament will continue, and there will be free music in the Walters City Park.

-Eddie Cochran Weekend festivities continue at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. The 17th annual Low Bucks Car Show and Swap Meet runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., along with a craft show. There will also be a model car contest and special trophies. Admission is $2, with 50 percent of the car show proceeds going to the Eddie Cochran Scholarship Fund.

-Memories Band of Austin will present the weekly free program of live music in the park at Edgewater Park beginning at 1:30 p.m. Memories will present a varied musical program. The group includes Ben Bednar Jr. as leader and playing saxophone and clarinet, Susan Hays on keyboard and LaVerne Walheim on drums.

-The Albert Lea Festival of Bands begins at 2 p.m. in downtown Albert Lea. Sixteen high school marching bands will be competing for trophies and prize money. There will be a concert by Su Fu Du, a drum line from Sioux Falls, S.D., following the parade in Central Park.
