Alliant to raise rates by 3.4 percent

Alliant Energy customers in southern Minnesota will see a rate increase of 3.4 percent on their monthly bill.

According to Janice Mathis, a representative for the company, the raise in price is due to the increase of capital costs in the region.

The rate increases took effect Friday after Alliant received approval from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission to do so.

The company has not increased rates since 1998, Mathis said. Meanwhile, they have invested in electrical infrastructure throughout the southern Minnesota region.

The increase is an interim one. Alliant is hoping to raise their rates from the 3.4 percent to 8 percent by next August.

However, the state commission has final say on how the rate will change and can possibly lower it. Mathis said if the rates are lowered, customers will be refunded for the interim rate increase.

Mathis said an average household will see an increase in their bill from $62.08 to $64.29 per month.

An 8 percent increase would bring that bill to $67.05 per month.
