Colonels get taste of big city

The Albert Lea Colonels got a taste of some Twin Cities baseball on Saturday.
They found out it’s every bit as tough as the Southern Minny League.
The Colonels hosted the Minneapolis Cobras in a doubleheader and lost 11-1 and 13-0 at Hayek Field.
“They’re a solid team,” said Colonels manager Bill Trygstad. “They didn’t have all their pitchers there, but they had all their hitters. We’ll probably schedule them again next year. They’re good competition. We just didn’t play very well.”
The Cobras were on the schedule because one of their players was a teammate and roommate of the Colonels’ Matt Trygstad at the University of South Dakota. The Cobras also have some current Minnesota Gophers and other former college players on their roster, and their catcher is the head coach at Hamline. They’re 17-8 overall and 11-2 in their league.
Game one was decided early as the Colonels’ Derek Anderson struggled in his first pitching start of the season, giving up six runs in less than two innings. He had six walks. Jay Link pitched well in relief, allowing only one run in the fourth before the Cobras plated three in the seventh.
The Colonels scored in the third, when Matt Trygstad led off with a double and, two outs later, came home when Justin Kohn hit into an error. Matt Trygstad was 2-for-4. The other Albert Lea hits were by Derek Goodnature and Ryan Wangen.
A right-hander named Rasmussen threw a seven-inning no-hitter at the Colonels in game two. He walked six, hit three batters and struck out four.
“He was a little wild,” said Bill Trygstad. “But we didn’t put the bat on the ball enough. We had a lot of ground ball outs.”
Isaac Walton started and took the loss for the Colonels, giving up six runs on four hits, with six walks and two strikeouts. Goodnature finished on the mound.
The Colonels, 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the Southern Minny League, have a busy week scheduled. They’re at Minnesota Lake tonight for a rescheduled game, host Blue Earth Wednesday and travel to New Richland Thursday before hosting consecutive home games against Austin, Rochester and Faribault starting Friday.
