Briefs: Football preview is tonight

The Quarterback Club and coaching staff of the Albert Lea Tigers football program will hold a special kick-off event for the 2003 season tonight.
The event starts with pictures at 5:45 p.m., followed by an intra-squad scrimmage for each age group. This will give the public a chance to see the players before the C-squad scrimmage on Friday and the varsity and B-squad scrimmage on Saturday.
After the scrimmage, the finest grilled bratwursts will be served during the annual brat feed.
Supporters of Tiger football are invited to attend.
Junior high football practice starts Monday
Junior high football practice starts Monday, Aug. 25 at 3:30 p.m. at Southwest Middle School.
All seventh and eighth-grade students interested in playing junior high football should stop at the Park and Recreation office and sign up prior to Monday, if possible. All participants are required to have a physical form on file at the high school.
Any seventh and eighth-grade students planning to play junior high football should report to Southwest Middle School at 3:30 p.m. Monday whether you are signed up or not as registration can be handled at this time. Equipment will also be handed out.
The practice schedule for the rest of the week:
-Tuesday, Aug. 26 – 3:30 to 5 p.m.;
-Wednesday, Aug. 27 – 3:30 to 5 p.m.;
-Thursday, Aug. 28 – 3:30 to 5 p.m.;
-Friday, Aug. 29 – no practice.
ALYSA meeting Aug. 27
The Albert Lea Youth Soccer Association will hold its annual general meeting Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the second floor meeting room at City Hall.
The public is welcome. The agenda includes election of officers for 2004 and a review of the 2003 season.
Northwood 3-on-3 basketball tournament set for Sept. 13
NORTHWOOD, Iowa &045; A 3-on-3 basketball tournament is scheduled as part of Northwood’s Founder Days on Saturday, Sept. 13.
There are divisions for boys and girls in grade 5 through post-high school. Games will begin at 10 a.m. on the downtown courts. Cost is $5 per team and no prizes will be given. No preregistration is required. Proceeds go to the N-K Booster Club.

Holiday Park tourney Aug. 24
HAYWARD &045; Holiday Park Golf Course near Hayward will host the two-person best-shot Pumping Irons Tourney Sunday, Aug. 24 at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $30 before Aug. 17, $40 after.

Quarterback Club to meet
There will be a Quarterback Club (football boosters) meeting on Monday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Elks Club. All parents and interested community members are invited.
