Editorial: Drive carefully as school year approaches

Now that summer is winding down, it’s a good time to be mindful that area children are heading back to school.
And with that, we encourage local motorists to be especially aware of children darting across the street, particularly during the hours just before school starts and right after the final bell rings for the day.
Motorists need to remember to pay extra attention when driving in school speed zones. Not only are more children apt to be crossing the street in these zones, but hefty fines can be assessed if you’re caught speeding there as well.
A new school year is exciting for both children and parents alike. We encourage parents to remind their children to practice safety when crossing roadways, and motorists to pay extra attention when driving in school zones.
