Editorial: Fair organizers deserve thanks

After so many years of good county fairs, it may be easy for Freeborn County residents to take the event for granted. Indeed, as we close the book on six more days packed with entertainment, it seems like memorable county fairs have become almost routine.

As usual, crowd-pleasing grandstand shows were the highlight and the biggest draw. And as nationally known musical acts were playing or the engines were roaring during the demolition derby and tractor pull, hundreds of Freeborn County residents were putting their best efforts on display in 4-H contests, the Home Activities Building and Floral Hall, creating a showcase for all to see. And if that wasn’t enough, Entertainment Square was constantly busy with shows, many of them from local performers.

Add a vastly improved carnival from Lowery Carnival Co., another exciting high-school rodeo and, of course, plenty to eat and drink, and you’ve got another successful fair.

The men and women who work year-round to plan and organize the county fair, and all of those who spend a summer week working there, deserve our congratulations on another fine effort. While it may be easy to take the fair for granted, the event simply would not happen without the hard work and dedication of hundreds.
