Weekend planner: Corn maze, corn fest top corn-filled weekend

The North Star Corn Maze, located near Northwood, Iowa, opens this weekend. This year’s theme is &uot;Wild, Wild West 2003.&uot;
The maze is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. through Nov. 2, or weekdays by appointment (call (641) 324-1435).
Admission is $5 per person. Children 5 and under are admitted free. Concessions, a gift shop and toilets are available on the grounds.
To get to the corn maze, travel south on Highway 65 and watch for the signs.
Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.
Friday, Aug. 22
-The works of Jim and Judith Miller of Blue House Pottery in Clear Lake, Iowa, and watercolor artist Kathy Mullins of Hutch-inson are on exhibit the Albert Lea Art Center, 224 S. Broadway Ave., from noon-4 p.m. Admission is free.
-Kernel Days activities in Wells includes the carnival, which opens at 5 p.m., and a
teen dance from 8 to 11 p.m. at Thompson park.
-The Pelican Breeze will hold a pizza cruise at 6 p.m. Reservations are required before 4 p.m. Friday. Call 383-2630.
Saturday, Aug. 23
-The Albert Lea Farmers’ Market is open in the parking lot at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Water Street from 9 a.m.-noon.
-Kernel Days activities in Wells include a pedal pull at 11 a.m. on South Broadway Ave., the carnival opening at noon, a performance by the Spotlight Dancers at 7 p.m. at Thompson Park, and the firemen’s street dance at the municipal parking lot from 8:30 p.m. until the music stops.

-Kernel Days activities in Wells include a VFW pancake breakfast, a parade at noon, free sweet corn at Thompson park after the parade, and the carnival opening at 1 p.m.
-Luverne’s Concertina Band will present the final weekly free program of live music of the season in Edgewater Park at 1:30 p.m. The band plays old-time waltzes and polkas.
-The Pelican Breeze will hold a special event cruise with the Luke Rye Bluegrass Band at 2 p.m. Call for reservations, 383-2630.
-The Albert Lea Audubon Society is taking a walk in a natural setting near Glenville.
All are invited.
The group will meet behind ShopKo at 2 p.m. People may bring a light lunch if they desire. There is no charge to attend.
