It was a big improvement for the Albert Lea High School girls’ soccer team.

The Tigers, blanked 5-0 at Owatonna in their season opener, were determined to keep it closer in Saturday’s rematch at Hammer Field and they did, dropping a 2-1 decision.

&uot;I’m real satisfied how we played,&uot; said coach Paul Marka. &uot;We showed we can play at their level.&uot;

Whitney Wilson scored off a long throw-in by Kendra Olcheske to put Albert Lea up 1-0 about 12 minutes into the second half. It remained 1-0 until Owatonna tied it with 12 minutes remaining and won it on penalty kick with 4 minutes left.

Goalie Annie Berger played a strong game, according to Marka, as did center midfielder Stacie Armstrong. Owatonna outshot Albert Lea 16-12.

The Tigers are 3-4-1 in the Big Nine and 3-5-1 overall. They play Tuesday at Winona.
