LEROY &045; For the second time in two weeks, the Glenville-Emmons Wolverines faced a football team rated among the best in the state by The Associated Press.
It was close again.
After dropping their season opener 13-7 to Hills-Beaver Creek, the Wolverines traveled to LeRoy-Ostrander and gave the No. 4 ranked Cardinals all they could handle in a 14-6 game.
On the opening possession, Cardinals quarterback Neal Bucknell threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to John Hanks. The PAT kick made it 7-0.
A second-quarter rushing touchdown by Bucknell and the PAT kick gave the home team a 14-0 lead.
From that point the G-E defense, led by Derek Lau, Kris Knutson, Wade Flattum and Eli Riggle, shut down the LR-O offense.
The Wolverines engineered a 50-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter, with Knutson scoring. The PAT attempt failed and it was 14-6 at halftime.
The Cardinals fumbled the opening second-half kickoff and the Wolverines recovered. After a run by Tony Walk, a pass intended for Flattum was intercepted.
For the game, LeRoy-Ostrander totaled 306 yards and 16 first downs to the Wolverines’ 118 and nine.
Quarterback Mike Yocom and Walk led the Wolverines in rushing with 39 and 35 yards, respectively.
Erik Nelson, Nathan Cooper, Ryan Madsen and Lau continued to improve their offensive line play.
The Wolverines host Cleveland this Friday.
