Crews installing scales near Ellendale
Published 12:00 am Monday, September 22, 2003
Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 23, crews will resume work installing weigh-in-motion scales on northbound Interstate 35, just north of Ellendale.
Northbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane in the work area. The southbound lanes will not be affected (southbound I-35 scales were installed in June of this year).
Weather permitting, the project should be completed by Thursday, Sept. 25.
The weigh-in-motion scales will collect data on vehicle size and estimated weight through a series of sensors embedded in the existing I-35 north and southbound lanes. The electronic data will be transmitted to a central database via a signal cabinet located on the right of way, far from the freeway.
The new system is different from many existing scales located adjacent to the freeway, in that data can be collected from vehicles at highway speeds.
Mn/DOT encourages motorists to stay alert and drive carefully through the work zone.
