When Addie Rust, then a 25-year veteran of the floral business, moved into the back of the Clarks Grove Hardware building five years ago, it was just going to be her shop.
“I’d had my floral business out of my home, and when I had a wedding, my refrigerator was full of flowers,” she recalled.
Well, the building is still her shop, but it also became home to a collection of unique gifts, known as Addie’s Floral and Gifts. Originally, she had one room set aside for gifts, but it soon became crowded and she opened another room.
“It’s still too crowded, but I keep seeing things that I think people will like,” she said with a smile. She added that years ago, when she had a floral shop in Glenville, she found a small-town shop needed more than one type of thing, and she sold not only consignment gifts, but decorating items and even a little hardware.
“In a small town, you do whatever you can to survive,” Rust said.
Her gifts range from primitive to elegant, and there are candles and cards, gourmet items and so much more. New items have just arrived and many celebrate the change in seasons.
“I love fall. Fall is one of the best times of the year to decorate,” Rust said, arranging bunch of silk oak leaves.
She said she enjoys the combination of flowers and gifts.
“With florals, you get to share in people’s happy times and help out in sad times,” Rust said. “I like being creative, and there’s so much pretty stuff out there now. I can’t picture anything else I’d rather do.&uot;
