Swimmers win third in a row

ST. PETER &045; It came down to the final three races for the Albert Lea High School girls’ swimming and diving team.
From that point it wasn’t even close.
The Tigers outscored St. Peter 34-12 down the stretch, overcoming a 72-68 deficit to defeat the Saints 102-84 in a nonconference dual meet Tuesday. Albert Lea won its third dual meet in a row while improving its record to 3-1.
&uot;What a fantastic meet,&uot; said coach LaChelle Sandon. &uot;We are on a winning streak and these girls have been working hard for it. I am very proud of all of them.&uot;
In a meet that was back and forth, the Tigers regained the lead with a 1-3-4 finish in the 100-yard backstroke with Kaeli Wayne (1:10.74), Jackie Elwood (1:13.36) and Alyssa Nelson (1:13.86).
Follow-ing with a 1-2-3 showing in the 100 breaststroke were Leah Matheson (1:13.27), Krista Horejsi (1:17.62) and Mariah McGill (1:21.21).
The Tigers finished it off with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay, where Lonna Vanderploeg, Wayne, Whitney Walters and Samantha Cole won in 4:06.5.
Wayne, Matheson, Cole and Vanderploeg combined for first in the 200 medley relay in 2:04.52.
Cole added two individual firsts, winning the 50 free in 27.02 seconds and the 100 free 59.5. Matheson won the 200 individual medley in 2:33.57.

St. Peter won the junior varsity meet 103-63. Firsts for the Tigers were by Walters, 50 free; Carly Schmitz, 100 breast; and the 200 medley relay team of Brianna Gold, Schmitz, Jillian Walechka and Nicole Larson.
The Tigers are in their home pool Thursday against Rochester Century.
