Weekend Planner: Aerial feats, historical treats on the schedule

Some of the finest aerobatic pilots in the country will duel in the skies above Albert Lea this weekend as the Minnesota Cloud Dancers (International Aerobatic Club Chapter 78) will host the 11th-annual North Central Aerobatic Contest at the Albert Lea Airport.
Primary to unlimited categories will be flown. Practice and registration are on Friday, with the actual competition on Saturday and Sunday. The public is invited to come out to the airport and watch the competition.
Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.
Friday, Sept. 5
-The North Star Corn Maze near Northwood, Iowa, is open from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. Children 5 and under are admitted free. Concessions, a gift shop and toilets are available on the grounds. To get to the corn maze, travel south on Highway 65 and watch for the signs.
-The Pelican Breeze will hold a pizza cruise at 6 p.m. Reservations are required before 4 p.m. Friday. Call 383-2630.
Saturday, Sept. 6
-The Albert Lea Farmers’ Market is open in the parking lot at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Water Street from 9 a.m.-noon.
-The Gopher-Hawkeye Power Association will host Farming of Yesteryear two miles east and two miles south of Kiester. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and under. The gates open at 9 a.m. There will be bingo from 10-11 a.m., a 20th anniversary parade at 1 p.m., JoAnne Lower performing at 2 p.m., Stub Highway 253 at 3:30 p.m. and Roger Passer at 5:30 p.m. Demonstrations include threshing, a grist mill, horse activities, plowing, a blacksmith shop, antiques and various field events. A free soup supper will served at 5 p.m.

-The Freeborn County Historical Museum, 1031 Bridge Ave., Albert Lea, will host &uot;Autumn in the Village from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for students ages 12 to 18. Members and children 11 years and under eat free. There will be apple pie, ice cream, hot dogs, hot sandwiches, popcorn, sarsaparilla, demonstrations, children’s crafts, rides, music and storytelling. The event will also celebrate the Livdalen cabin sesquicentennial and postcards and stamp cancellation. Antiques appraisals will be made for $3 per item.
-Bear Lake Lutheran Church will holds its fall luncheon and bazaar from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Cost is $4 for adults and $2 for kindergartners through 10 years old. Preschoolers eat free. There will also be a bake sale, crafts, garden produce and an afghan raffle.
-The Pelican Breeze will hold a public cruise at 2 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 7
-The Gopher-Hawkeye Power Association will host Farming of Yesteryear two miles east and two miles south of Kiester. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and under. The gates open at 6:30 a.m. There will be a church service in the Lime Creek Country Church at 7 a.m., breakfast from 8-10 a.m., Al Batt at 10:30 a.m., a kids’ pedal pull at noon, the 20th anniversary parade at 1:30 p.m., and Dunnell Lenort performing at 2 p.m. Demonstrations include threshing, a grist mill, horse activities, plowing, a blacksmith shop, antiques and various field events. A free soup supper will served at 5 p.m.
-The Albert Lea Golden K-1 Kiwanis Club will hold a Dad’s Belgian waffles breakfast from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Albert Lea Armory. Cost is $5.50 per person, with children under 5 eating free. Tickets are available at the door and from Golden K-1 members. Proceeds benefit local youth programs.
