Frederick D. Paulsen, 87, Hollandale

Funeral services for Frederick D. Paulsen, age 87, will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hollandale. The Rev. Jeff Kuddes will officiate. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Fred died on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003. at the Albert Lea Medical Center.
Frederick Dockwell Paulsen was born on Dec. 6, 1915, in Franklin County, Iowa, the son of Fred and Anna (Dockwell) Paulsen. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hampton, Iowa, and confirmed at Hayward Lutheran Church in Hayward. Fred attended ISD #132, (the Campbell School), and Grandview College in Des Moines.
On April 15, 1939, Fred was united in marriage to Ruth I. Mayer in Osage, Iowa. Fred worked for Wilson and Co. for a short time and then began farming. He farmed in Freeborn County for over 50 years. Fred was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he served as a trustee, was chairman for ISD #88, vice-chair of the Freeborn County Farmer’s Union, an officer of the Riceland Township Board, a member of the DFL party, a member of the Danish Brotherhood Lodge #75, and a member of the Moose Lodge. Fred and Ruth loved to go dancing.
Survivors include his children: Douglas and wife Dorothy Paulsen, and Frederick “Fritz” and wife Sheryl Paulsen, all of Vancouver, Wash., Victoria and husband James Sanvik, Pamela and husband James Brown, Debra and husband Larry Runden, Kevin and wife Ann Paulsen, and Margaret and husband Gary Nelson, all of Albert Lea; grandchildren: Scott and wife Donalyn Paulsen, Kimberly and husband Charlie Brown, Angela High, Heather and husband Thomas Mairs, Chad Gilbertson, Lisa and husband Timothy Smith, Erin and husband Gregory Hanson, Jeffrey Runden, Ryan and wife Nancy Brown, Gina Brown, Alex Paulsen and Brett Paulsen; 13 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Margaret Guckeen of Austin; brother-in-law, Joseph “Bud” Mayer of Usingen, Germany; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Ruth; his son-in-law, Allen Gilbertson; twin great-grandchildren Lily Ruth and Marissa Sue Paulsen; and siblings: Lillian Paulsen, Viola and husband Gill Larson, Goldia and husband Harry Lund, Harry and wife Deloris Paulsen, Sylvia and husband Charles Frydenlund, and Fern and husband Clifford Olson.
