Halloween events get an early start

The Albert Lea Fire Explorers will present their annual Halloween Haunted House Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24 and 25, at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. Hours are from 7-10 p.m. Admission is $3 per person.
This is the Fire Explorers’ only fund-raiser.
Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.
Friday, Oct. 24
– The North Star Corn Maze near Northwood, Iowa, is open from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. Children 5 and under are admitted free.
Concessions, a gift shop and toilets are available on the grounds. To get to the corn maze, travel south on Highway 65 and watch for the signs.
-Friends for Fountains will offer a free hotdog lunch and dinner in New Denmark Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event is intended to raise funds to put even more fountains in Fountain Lake, including a larger fountain. Those who donate over $25 will receive a print created by local artist Eloise Adams.
– The Albert Lea Art Center, 224 S. Broadway Ave., features the quilts, wearable art and wall hangings of the Larson sisters, Sharon Morreim, Jan Prescher, Joyce Stenzel and Merle Stensrud. Gallery hours are noon-4 p.m. Admission is $1.
– The Pumpkin Patch of Albert Lea is open from 1-6 p.m. The patch features pumpkin games and displays, pumpkin house, farm animals and spook house. To get to the patch, go two miles west of Wal-Mart on County Road 46. Turn left on County Road 71. Go 1/2 mile south, and watch for signs on the right.
– Albert Lea Vineyard Church, 419 Adams Ave., will hold a fall festival from 7-9 p.m. This family event is open to open to children kindergarten through sixth grade and their parents. There will be games, snacks, drawings and lots of fun. People should feel free to come in costume, but it’s asked that there be no scary or evil themes. There is no charge to attend.
– Albert Lea Community Theatre presents &uot;Blithe Spirit&uot; at 7:30 p.m. in the Albert Lea Civic Theatre. For reservations, call the box office at 377-4371.
Saturday, Oct. 25
-The Albert Lea Farmers’ Market is open in the parking lot at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Water Street from 9 a.m.-noon.
-The Albert Lea Art Center, 224 S. Broadway Ave., features the quilts, wearable art and wall hangings of the Larson sisters, Sharon Morreim, Jan Prescher, Joyce Stenzel and Merle Stensrud. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission is $1.

– The Emmons Commercial Club is sponsoring a variety show at 7 p.m. in the Emmons School. Admission is $3 for adults and $1.50 for children. Funds raised help support city events, including kids’ Christmas and the library.
– Albert Lea Community Theatre presents &uot;Blithe Spirit&uot; at 7:30 p.m. in the Albert Lea Civic Theatre. For reservations, call the box office at 377-4371.
– The Albert Lea Solos and Singles will be having a Halloween dance at 8 p.m. at the Albert Lea Moose Lodge. There will be mixers, prizes, and a costume contest with first, second and third-place prizes. Come with a mask, costume or whatever you choose. Music is by the Full House band.
Sunday, Oct. 26
– The Glenville Fire and Rescue Department will have their annual pancake breakfast from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Glenville-Emmons High School. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice, milk and coffee. A freewill offering will be accepted.

– Robert Robinson, lead singer for Lori Line, will be in concert at 4 p.m. in the Albert Lea High School Auditorium. Advance tickets are $10 ($12 at the door). Tickets are available at Andersen Hallmark stores, Bible Book Store, CVB/Chamber and the Albert Lea Good Samaritan Center.
