FARIBAULT &045; It doesn’t really matter what happens after this for the Alden-Conger Knights.
They got where they wanted.
The Knights made it to Rochester and the Mayo Civic Center with a 3-2 upset of Medford in the sub-section volleyball tournament at Faribault Thursday night. The Knights won 25-21, 18-25, 25-21, 11-25, 15-13.
&uot;It was a match where everyone played well,&uot; said coach Jon Jahnke. &uot;Often you have a match where two, three or four girls play well but one doesn’t have their best night. Tonight, a lot of our girls had their best match of the year.&uot;
The win earned them a chance to play Saturday at the Mayo Civic Center, where they were scheduled to face the No. 1 rated team in the state in Class A, Faribault Bethlehem Academy.
Jahnke said the underdog role did not bother the Knights, at least not against Medford.
&uot;Medford is a strong team, and they were obviously favored, but sometimes it’s easier being the underdog,&uot; said the coach. &uot;We were a little looser, especially at the end, and I think they got a little tense. It was an excellent match.&uot;
The Knights, who overcame a 13-10 deficit in game five, served 88-for-96 for the night and totaled 88 digs as a team.
Individual leaders: Kenzie Johnson 10 kills, 19 digs; Jenny Krueger 6 kills; Mandy Kruger 24-for-33 attacks, 10 kills, 24 digs; Angie Wichmann 12 digs, 19-for-21 serving, 31 assists; Kendra Mathiason 9 kills, 12 digs; Tana Reindal 15-for-16 serving, 7 digs.
&uot;All in all, it was just a good match for our girls,&uot; said Jahnke. &uot;It’s exciting to have a chance to move on and play in the Civic Center. It’s a good experience for the girls and a big boost for the program.&uot;
