MASON CITY, Iowa &045; The scoring was a little weird and the Albert Lea Tigers were a little out of synch.
It added up to a 1-2 showing for the Albert Lea High School volleyball team in Saturday’s Mason City Invitational.
&uot;We did play some good volleyball at times, but overall this tournament was a bit disappointing,&uot; said coach Gina Eppen. &uot;I think the girls realized the importance of being mentally prepared for a game. We weren’t at times in this tournament and it really took its toll.&uot;
Matches were best-of-three, 21-point games the first two, 15 points for the tiebreaker.
The Tigers opened against a strong Decorah team and lost 21-13, 16-21, 15-5.
Amber Edwards had 11 kills to lead the Tigers past Boone 21-16, 22-23, 15-9.
The final pool match was a loss to Newton, 21-1, 21-16.
Individual statistics: Katie Brackey 20 assists, 11 digs, one ace, four blocks, two kills; Jenna Brackey 16 assists, 22 digs, one ace, two blocks, three kills; Emily Bartusek one assist, 12 digs, two blocks, five kills; Edwards 12 digs, one ace, five blocks, 16 kills; Heather Stegenga 15 digs, one ace, four blocks, seven kills; Danielle Rankin 17 digs, one assist, two aces, two blocks, 10 kills; Laura Jackson four digs, one kill.
&uot;The girls had some opportunities to earn more wins,&uot; said Eppen. &uot;We don’t feel we took full advantage of those opportunities. We will turn the corner and play John Marshall on Tuesday with more focus and determination. I think the girls learned some lessons on Saturday the hard way. Hopefully those lessons learned will pay off as we wrap up the regular season and plan for the postseason next week.&uot;
The Tigers host JM tonight in their final home match of the season.
