Albert Lea girls win at Fairmont

FAIRMONT &045; Tessa Christensen and Laura Hillman led the way as the Albert Lea High School girls’ hockey team skated to a 6-1 nonconference victory at Fairmont Thursday night.

Christensen scored three goals and had an assist while Hillman registered a goal and three assists.

Heather Bagley and Anna Sigurdson added goals for the Tigers, with additional assists going to Karissa Lau, Amy Leach and Lacy Oyer.

Albert Lea led 3-0 at the end of the first period and 5-1 after two.

Senior Erin Schlarbaum, who has been hampered by a knee injury, played the first two periods in goal. Jenny Birkhofer was in the net for the third.

&uot;Erin’s knee seems to be fine,&uot; said coach Jason Fornwald. &uot;We just wanted to get Jenny some playing time.&uot;

The Tigers outshot Fairmont 38-14. Albert Lea had five penalties to three for the Cardinals.

&uot;The girls played a good game,&uot; said Fornwald, whose team improved its record to 13-5-1. &uot;We had three solid periods. It’s nice to go into a conference game on Saturday after a nice win.&uot;

The Tigers return to Big Nine play Saturday with a 6 p.m. game against Rochester John Marshall at the Rochester Recreation Center.
