12-and-under B girls take district title

The Albert Lea Elks 12-and-under B girls’ hockey team finished the season with its &uot;A&uot; game, winning the championship in the District 4 tournament.

Seeded No. 1 by virtue of a 15-1 regular-season record, the locals opened district play against Waseca. Makenzie Boone scored 26 seconds into it, assisted by Amanda Hanson and Brittany Osmundson, and Albert Lea rolled to an easy victory. Madi Passingham finished with three goals, Boone two, Adison Wangen one. Adding assists were Boone, Hanson, Jacqui Jepson, Natasha Moyer and Osmundson. Erin Shahan and Sydney Conley shared time in goal.

After allowing Mankato a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period, the Elks team responded with five unanswered goals for a 5-1 semifinal triumph. Lauren Draayer and Haley Habana scored two goals apiece, Osmundson one. Osmundson, Passingham and Jepson had assists.

The championship game was against second-seeded Owatonna, which took a 1-0 lead at 5:45 of the first period. Albert Lea tied it eight minutes later, with Habana scoring on a Passingham assist. Albert Lea added three more goals, by Habana, Passingham and Jacqui Jepson with assists going to Habana, Passingham and Moyer.

Albert Lea played strong defense led by Jacqui Jepson, Sophia Jepson and Anna Anderson to shut down any scoring threats from Owatonna for the rest of the game.

The rest of the roster included Megan Shahan, Nicole Wilson and Lindsey Kirsch. Mike Gordon was the head coach, assisted by Steve Smit, Rick Moyer and Ed Pomerson.
