Editorial: Hats are off to students who volunteer time

Finding a way to introduce kids to the world of volunteerism should be applauded by all of us who may one day count on their generousity.
Friday, on National Youth Service Day, Youth Development Coordinator Audra Nissen was the first, but not the only one to say thanks, honoring students at Albert Lea High School. Most gratifying was that nearly three-quarters of the student body stood up to receive recognition.
Taking time say thanks to the students sends them the message that the work they do as volunteers is important and will likely result in continued service as they move through college and into their adult lives.
Continued service by our young people should be good news for those of us, who as we age, may come to depend on various organizations which count on volunteers to do their work.
Another point worth making is students are already pretty busy people. We can’t imagine trying to maintain the pace most high schoolers do. They are in school most of the day, before heading off to after-school activities and a few hours of homework. Somehow, they make time for family and friends and social events, church and volunteering as well.
Our hats are off to these students; we hope you’ll take your hat off to them, too.
