Dean H. Hummer, age 80, of Kiester

Dean H. Hummer, age 80, of Kiester, died Sunday, May 2, 2004, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa, from complications of heart failure and Parkinson’s disease.

Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, at Grace United Methodist Church in Kiester. The Rev. Lynn Borgeson will officiate. Visitation will he held at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells from 5 to 7 p.m. today and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, rural Kiester.

Dean was born on Oct. 26, 1923, near Kiester, the son of Andrew Ray and Metha (Meyer) Hummer. He was a lifelong resident of the Kiester area and graduated from Kiester High School in 1942. On Aug. 6, 1949, he was united in marriage to Norma Jean Somage in Kiester. He farmed in the Kiester area until his retirement in 1991 and continued to live on the farm in Kiester Township until moving to Lake Mills Care Center in September 2003. Dean was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and enjoyed fishing, yard work, and caring for his pets.

He Is survived by his wife, Jean of Kiester; one daughter, Debra (husband Ove) Oren of Truman, Minn.; two sons: Craig H. Hummer of Farmington, Minn., and Ronald D. (wife Linda) Hummer of Mapleton; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Arlene Hummer of Minneapolis; two sisters-in-law: Marian Hummer of Wells, and Arletta Hummer of Albert Lea; and several nieces and nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: Burdette and Russell Hummer.

The family of Dean H. Hummer acknowledges with appreciation, and gives thanks for the many kind expressions of caring support and sympathy. Special thanks to the Lake Mills Care Center nurses and aids and to the hospice caregivers for their special care.
