Clara A. Storvick, 97, Corvallis, Ore.

Clara A. Storvick died May 24, 2004, at Samaritan Heart of the Valley Care Center in Corvallis, Ore. She was 97 years old. She was born Oct. 31, 1906, to Ole A. and Elise Opdahl Storvick in Emmons, and moved with her parents to Crookston, Saint Paul, and Albert Lea, where she finished high school in 1925.
She earned her bachelor of arts degree in biology from St. Olaf College, Northfield, in 1929 and started graduate work at Iowa State University. After a year there she interrupted her graduate study to teach chemistry at Augustana Academy in Canton, S.D. from 1930 to 1932. She returned to Iowa State University to complete the requirements for the master of science degree which she received in 1933 and stayed on as a research assistant for a year. She then served as nutritionist with the Federal Emergency Relief Administration in Minnesota from 1934 to 1936.
From 1936 to 1938 she was assistant professor of nutrition at Oldahoma State University. In 1938 she went to Cornell University to continue her graduate study in nutrition and received her Ph. D. in 1941. From 1941 to 1945 she was assistant Professor of nutrition at the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash.
From 1945 to 1972 she was on the faculty of Oregon State University and at the time of her retirement she was professor of nutrition, head of home economics research and director of the Nutrition Research Institute.
She contributed more than seventy articles to professional journals. In 1952 she was awarded the Borden Medal by the American Home Economics Association. She received the Distinguished Alumni Award from St. Olaf College in 1955 and in 1956 the Alumni Achievement Award from Iowa State University. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, Iota Sigma Pi and Omicron Nu honorary societies and was a fellow of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science. She held membership in American Public Health Association, American Institute of Nutrition, the New York Academy of Sciences and the American Chemical Society.
After her retirement she was a volunteer in the medical records department of Good Samaritan Hospital. She was an honorary trustee on the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation Board in Corvallis.
She is survived by three nephews; Olin J. Storvick of Moorhead, David A. Storvick of Minneapolis, and Harry E. Hazeltine Jr. of Redding, Calif.; and by three nieces, Rosalie Miller of Zumbrota, Sonia Hagestuen of Aitkin, and Karen Foss of Redding, Calif. and their families. Her brother Roy and sister Joyce preceded her in death.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Corvallis where a memorial service was held June 4, 2004. A memorial service and committal will be held at 1 P.M. on Tuesday, June 15 in Round Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Glenville.
