Cornelius Roy Vanderploeg, 80, Hollandale

Funeral services for Cornelius R. Vanderploeg, age 80, of Hollandale, will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 4, at the Hollandale Christian Reformed Church. The Rev. Gary Brouwers will officiate. Interment will be in the Hollandale Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Freeborn County Veteran’s Organizations. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the services at the church.
Cornelius died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at the Albert Lea Medical Center.
Cornelius Roy Vanderploeg was born Jan. 7, 1924, in Choteau, Mont., to Richard and Marie (Middel) Vanderploeg. In 1925, the family moved to Crookston, Minn., and then to a farm near Clarks Grove in 1934. Cornelius moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1946 and worked at John Morrell Meat Packing Plant.
On March 25, 1947, he was united in marriage to Sadie Tolsma at the Hollandale Christian Reformed Church. The couple stayed in Sioux Falls until March of 1948 and then moved to a farm close to Clarks Grove before buying a farm near Austin in March of 1950. Cornelius fanned there until he retired in 1980 because of health problems. He had attended Hollandale Christian Reformed Church all his married life and had served on the church council. Cornelius loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed traveling in his motor home and visiting antique shows while his health permitted and riding his motorcycle.
Survivors include his wife, Sadie; son, Larry and his wife Lois Vanderploeg; daughter, Marilyn and her husband Dean Slegh; grandchildren: Audrey, Rachelle and her husband Mark, Conley, Stacy, Chad, Cory and his wife Keri, Carey and his fianc Peggy, and Candace and her husband T.J.; great-grandchildren: Isaac, Caleb, Zachary, Brett and Shelby; and brothers and sisters: Winnie Meelker, Sadie and her husband William DeBoer, Jeanette Vande Brake, Ray and his wife Maxine Vanderploeg, and Pete and his wife Kathy Vanderploeg.
Cornelius was preceded in death by his parents, and brother-in-law, William Vande Brake.
Memorials are preferred to the Hollandale Christian School.
