Editorial: Use caution on state roads this weekend

With gas prices lower than they were over Memorial Day weekend and improved consumer confidence, Americans are expected to travel in record-high numbers this holiday weekend.
According to AAA, the July 4 period traditionally is the heaviest travel period of the summer, with trips ranging from weekend getaways to extended road trips.
Whether navigating the backroads, highways or construction zones, increased traffic means motorists need to exercise caution as they hit the road.
Over the weekend, motorists will not see much construction activity, but they need to watch for equipment, traffic changes and highway workers who may need to be present in the work zones during the holiday.
There will also be lane closures, detours and rough and/or uneven driving surfaces requiring drivers’ full attention.
Of course, the traditional rules for safe travel also apply:
– Follow posted speed limits; fines double in work zones.
– Avoid using cell phones while driving.
– Allow extra space between vehicles.
– Plan trips ahead.
– Take breaks to stay alert.
– Don’t drink and drive.
-Buckle up for safety so you can arrive alive.
Don’t mar a wonderful holiday or vacation with an accident. Use caution on the roads.
