Elizabeth Vander Veen, 88, Albert Lea

The funeral service for Elizabeth Vander Veen, of Albert Lea, will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, Albert Lea. The Rev. Dwight Netzer will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.

Elizabeth died Friday, July 16, 2004, at St. John’s Lutheran Home. She was 88 years old.

Elizabeth was born July 1, 1916, in Lorain Township, Nobles County, Minn., to Cornelius and Minnie (Vogel) Vanden Hul. Minnie died when Elizabeth was four years old. Her father remarried and Elizabeth was raised on a farm near Hospers, Iowa. She moved to Hollandale in 1926, when Elizabeth was 11 years old. She moved to Iowa in 1934 to a large farm near Orange City, Iowa. When the farm sold she moved to Hospers, Iowa. Elizabeth met Minard Vander Veen in 1944. He worked for American Gas Company. They were married on April 6, 1944, in Freeborn County, Hollandale. They lived in Hollandale for six years while her husband worked as a custodian for the school. They then moved to Clarks Grove while he worked at the school for four years. They then moved to Albert Lea where she resided for 26 years on St. Thomas Ave. and the Senior Court for 16 years. Elizabeth was a resident of St. John’s Lutheran Home since Aug. 3, 2003. Elizabeth was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Elizabeth is survived by a half brother, Roy Vanden Hul and his wife Jeanette of Orange City, Iowa.

Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents; stepmother; brother: John Vanden Hul, in June of 1987; and half brother, Ted Vanden Hul, in 1998.

Elizabeth will be missed by her close friends: Beverly Haugen, Sandra Stevens and Rev. Dwight Netzer.
