Sara Ann ‘Sally’ Butsch, 54, San Francisco

Sara Ann &uot;Sally&uot; Butsch died at San Francisco General Hospital on Sunday, July 25, 2004.

Sally was born in Fort Knox, Ky., in 1950. The daughter of a military family, she grew up in Ankara, Turkey, Fort Monroe and Hampton, Va., Tokyo, Japan, Burtonwood Army Depot in England, Richfield, Minn., Kaiserlautern, Germany, and San Francisco, Calif.

Whenever her father’s Army assignments sent him to a location where families could not go, she moved with her mother and brother back to Albert Lea, her mother’s hometown. Sally attended Hawthorne Elementary School and Central Junior High, and her family attended the First Methodist Church of Albert Lea.

After graduating from Kaiserlautern American High School in 1968, Sally attended San Jose State College in California. In 1973, she earned a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from Lone Mountain College in San Francisco.

Although she fought a long battle with schizophrenia, a disease that affected

nearly every aspect of her life, Sally enjoyed recreational swimming and walking, celebrating holidays and birthdays with family members, and listening to the music of Elvis Presley. She did volunteer work at the Presidio Thrift Shop, St. Teresa’s Haven for the Mentally Handicapped, and the Recreation Center for the Handicapped in San Francisco.

Sally was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents:Irvin and Georgiana &uot;Jo&uot; Wayne of Albert Lea; her uncle, Richard Wayne; and her aunt, Donna Wayne Afra.

Survivors include her parents: Col. (ret.) Thomas C. Butsch and Betty Wayne Butsch of San Francisco; her brother, Tom Butsch of Los Angeles, Calif.; sister-in-law, Joan Graham of Albert Lea; nieces: Jennifer Laura Paige of Minneapolis, and Susannah Becket of New York; her aunt, Beverly Wayne Simonson of Prior Lake; and uncles: Bob Wayne of San Jose, Calif., and Tom Wayne of Los Gatos, Calif.
