Marvel Maureen Hanson was born Nov. 27, 1910, to Albert and Anna Elizabeth (Bailey) Kaufman in Pickerel Lake Township, Freeborn County. She was raised on a farm near Conger and attended and graduated from a country school. While studying at a business college in Minneapolis, she worked as a nanny for her room and board. On Nov. 20, 1930, she was united in marriage to Russell E. Hanson in Mason. City, Iowa, Marvel farmed with her husband south of Hayward and also west of Albert Lea. The couple moved to Albert Lea in 1951 where she painted and wallpapered in many homes. Marvel was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at Concordia Lutheran Church in the class of 1924. She and her husband became members of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1937, where she was active in the youth group, Sunday school, missionary society, and served on the church board. Marvel enjoyed traveling, visiting with family and friends, and spent many happy hours playing Scrabble and Yahtzee.
