David George Scherb, 85, Kiester

David George Scherb, age 85, of Kiester, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at his home in rural Kiester of complications of renal failure.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Kiester. The Rev. Richard Steffen will officiate. Visitation will be held at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells today, Sept. 16, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. sharing memories time, and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Interment will be at Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery in Kiester with Military Honors by the Kiester American Legion Post #454.

David was born on April 20, 1919, on the family farm in Kiester Township, Faribault County, the son of Otto and Barbara &uot;Minnie&uot; (Obermeyer) Scherb. He attended grade school through eighth grade and the Farm Ag School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He married Ellen Elvebak on June 20, 1944, at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Kiester. He was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent. From 1967, he was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Kiester and was very active in the Men in Mission. He served on the Kiester Township Board as treasurer, the Creamery Board, the Kiester Elevator Board and other numerous farm organizations. He enjoyed working with Farming of Yesteryear in his later years. He was a member of the Kiester American Legion Post #454. He was an innovator and inventor.

He enjoyed mowing lawn, woodworking and fishing, and especially his pet cats and dogs. Family was of deep importance to David and he provided a great lifelong, faithful example to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

David is survived by his three children: Phyllis and her husband Mitchel Rydberg of Dell Rapids, S.D., Steven and his wife Kathy Scherb of Stillwater, and Michael and his wife Lori Jo Scherb of Blaine, Minn.; eight grandchildren: Chad and wife Penny Rydberg, Kirsten and husband Scott Thompson, Erik Scherb, Ryan Scherb, Angela Scherb, Jenessa Scherb, Jocelin Scherb and Jillian Scherb; four great-grandchildren: Mason, Ellen and Grace Thompson, and Claire Rydberg; two sisters: Elvira Grundman of Sonoma, Calif., and

Mildred and husband Warren Slagle of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and special friends: Mark and Karen Zabel, Braeden and Conner of Kiester.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ellen, in 1998; sister, Ruth; and great-grandson, Collin.
